John Gossage is known to be a very moody black and white photographer. His photographs usually revolve around "political undercurrents, images that subtly explore the sociopolitical skull beneath the skin of external appearance and cunningly allude to the forces that shape the world we humans create for ourselves." Personally, I am not a big fan of his work but enjoy the message he is trying to send. "Gossage's photographs are continually questioning our sense of the world;... the sense of questioning extends to how we view, and see, what is around us." One article says that Gossage basically walked around in Washington, D.C., and photographed what he saw. He thought of these images as the American Dream. I think Gossage has a good idea and a strong message but is relying on the audience too much to understand what he means. To a person that has not read the article, his photographs are forgettable but to someone that has read it, they can understand the idea and metaphors behind the pictures.
